Am I the Only One that Needs Help?

I am sure I am showing my age by writing this but , I just don’t get It!
What ever happened to returning telephone calls?
I don’t know who taught me this, but I always felt that failing to return a call was considered rude and an affront to the person who called you.

In those days the most frequently used lie was “I’m so sorry , I never got the message.” This worked well in the days before voice mail and caller ID. In any event, I was always compelled to return all calls, and when I didn’t I felt awful. To be sure telemarketing was rare, and the phone was not with you 24 hrs. a day. Actually the only time
I was near a telephone, that I was permitted to use, was when I was at home. Thank goodness for that!
Cell phones began as a luxury and status symbol. They were expensive, and were not a necessity; at that time everyone accepted that a phone call was not an emergency. As cell phones began to be accepted by the population I still avoided them, computers ,email and the rest, but finally I gave in . It was that or become a hermit, and never hear from my kids again.
Today with i-phones and blackberries bombarding us with calls, texts, emails, and tweets 24/7 it is not surprising that I make calls that go unreturned, or text messages that get no response; still it doesn’t feel good.
Now that I am armed with my own personal space age telecommunication system 24 hours a day; I am lost! I need help! What to do? What to expect? Should I still feel hurt when my calls are not returned or ,emails and texts not responded to? When I text or email; is it polite to go directly to the core of the matter omitting salutations and other niceties?
Is it necessary for to respond to text and emails, and how do I end an instant messenger conversation? There must be an ”Ms Manners“ out there to help me.
And what about the emails I receive that say if I don’t forward them to at least ten people on my contacts list and one back to the sender that I don’t love America! Forward it back to sender!
What is up with that? Are they really checking to see if I love America? And if I fail the test, do I need to be put on a list of America haters ? To me this seems rude, but what do I know, I still feel guilty when cut off a telemarketer.
HELP!!!
